F1, Toto Wolff on Ferrari flop: “We understood it on Friday…”
Mercedes team principal Wolff’s backstory on Ferrari’s flop: “We had tried hard ones on Friday and immediately discarded them.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff returned in an interview with Viaplay to Ferrari’s egregious mistake in Hungary, when fitting hard tires to Charles Leclerc effectively scuttled him. “We had tried the hard tires on Friday and our reaction even then was, ‘No, no, no for goodness sake.’ That’s why we came into the race with multiple sets of medium tires.”
“It turned out to be the winning strategy and I think that’s what cost Ferrari the win,” Wolff said bluntly. Instead, the German team scored yet another podium finish and now has the Cavallino, which seemed unreachable at the start of the season, in its sights. “We have had two good results in the last few races. We have a good amount of data to analyze to try to make even more progress. Friday, you saw it, was a total disaster for us, but at least we know what we did to make our car better.”
