Dries Mertens, greeting to Napoli fans arrives
Experience ended after nine years
Dries Mertens’ beautiful and long adventure with the Napoli shirt came to an end this summer after nine years together. The player and the club failed to agree on the renewal of his contract, which expired on June 30.
So the Belgian wanted to say goodbye to Napoli fans with a video message: “Dear Neapolitans, I knew this day would eventually come, but I didn’t know how difficult it would be to say goodbye,” Mertens said. “This city has adopted me, loved me and supported me. Records and victories will be in the books, but people will always be in my heart and I am very happy that my son Ciro was born here.”
“For nine years Naples has been my land, the city has become part of me and I decided to keep my home on the Gulf,” added Mertens himself. “I can only thank everyone: my departure has not defined itself as I would have liked but for me it is not a farewell, it is only a goodbye. Napoli, but how much fun we had.”
About the Belgian striker’s future there are still many doubts. Mertens has no intention of betraying Napoli fans by accepting the court of Juventus, but in the last hours after rumors about Marseille and Ajax, the concrete hypothesis of Galatasaray has popped up.
