F1, heading for Fia-Ferrari clash: Mattia Binotto very tough
New anti-porpoising rules have the Formula 1 circus debating: Ferrari is ready to go sideways.
Fia President Mohammed Ben Sulayem confirmed the federation’s intention to introduce new anti-porpoising changes ahead of the 2023 World Championship. “After discussing the issue of porpoising with all 20 drivers and 10 team principals, I am happy to confirm that I will submit to the World Council this week modifications to the F1 technical regulations, in addition to the measures already taken for the rest of the season,” he wrote in a tweet.
According to rumors, next year’s cars will, among other things, have to be raised 25 mm higher than they are now from the ground to prevent hopping. Changes that are likely to penalize Red Bull and Ferrari, and benefit those who lag behind like Mercedes.
Maranello team principal Mattia Binotto was strongly against it: “I hope there will be no change, I don’t see any real reason to make changes to the technical regulations for safety reasons, especially if we look at the last few races. Plus if they change the aerodynamic regulations for 2023 it would be a big problem considering the time of year we are in, there would be very little time to change the concept of the new single-seater. And, again, there is no reason to introduce changes to the technical regulations citing safety reasons. So, I think it can’t happen, and if it does, we will try to figure out how to stop them.”
