F1 Ferrari: Carlos Sainz puzzled by choice of Charles Leclerc
“You are in the middle of an opportunity for Ferrari to win the championship: why find yourself in this situation?”: Sainz skeptical of Leclerc’s choice to drive historic cars
Carlos Sainz in an interview with the official Formula 1 website confessed his puzzlement over Charles Leclerc’s choice to participate in some F1 historic car exhibitions. The Monegasque in the Monte Carlo exhibition run, aboard Niki Lauda’s Ferrari 312B3, took a big risk by going head-on into a wall.
According to Sainz, the experience of driving the historic single-seaters is not worth the risk: “You are in the middle of an opportunity for Ferrari to win the championship. Why risk being in a situation like what happened to him? I’ve had the opportunity to test an old Ferrari in the past, and that always gives you an insight into what the sport was like a long time ago. My mind is split in half, though, because I ask myself, why take the risk? Seriously, why?”
“I also say to myself, when will I ever get the opportunity to drive these cars again,” Sainz continued. So every time I get into a classic Formula 1 car, I have these two things in mind. And if I jump in a car, I push it to the maximum. I don’t know how you get into a race car, put your elbow out the window and drive. I have no idea how to do that.”
