Walter Mazzarri at World Cup in Qatar is more than a possibility
Negotiations underway between Tuscan coach and Moroccan soccer federation
Walter Mazzarri could fly to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup as Morocco’s technical commissioner. Reporting the sensational speculation is the British Arabic-language newspaper Al Araby, according to which the coach from St. Vincent is in Rabat, the capital of the North African country, to discuss details regarding the deal with the top brass of the local soccer federation.
Mazzarri comes from his experience ended badly at Cagliari, with his exoneration in the last part of a difficult season, which the islanders would later end with relegation to Serie B. The opportunity provided by the Moroccan federation would also be very important to experience one of the highest aspirations of a coach, that of directing a team from the sidelines in the soccer event par excellence, the World Cup.
Morocco arrived at the World Cup after winning the decisive double-header against the Democratic Republic of Congo (1-1 in the first leg, 4-1 in the return). Three months into the review, however, the qualification coach, Vahid Halilodzic, was exonerated due to differences of opinion with the federation. Hence the search for a new coach, with Mazzarri’s name at the top of the notebook of Moroccan federation president Fawzi Lekjaa.
