MotoGp has announced the introduction of the Sprint Race starting next year.

Dorna and CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta made official at a press conference in Austria the introduction of the Sprint Race in MotoGp starting next season. A sudden and controversial move that is generating controversy and splits in the grid.

The new format of the premier class kicks off from 2023, on each weekend, and will include the two classic free practice sessions on Friday, while on Saturday there will be the traditional qualifying (eliminating the morning free practice) and then the Sprint Race. The mini race will last half as long as the classic race, which will always be held on Sunday afternoon, and will award half the points up for grabs instead on Sunday. “We have already decided, however, that the Sprint Race will not count for the MotoGP starting grid, that will depend only on practice,” Ezpeleta pointed out.
