Marcell Jacobs, rumors of a fight: the Federation’s response
Athletics Federation president Mei: “Jacobs wanted to run but reverted pain, I had a confrontation with him but deny arguments”
Athletics Federation President Stefano Mei denied rumors of a fight with Marcell Jacobs after he forfeited in the 4×100 relay: “Jacobs wanted to run the relay. When he went to the track he felt a pain in his calf, in a different place than in the 100 final. I had a confrontation with him but there was no quarrel.”
“His coach was a little more puzzled, Marcell was available but then had to give up. if we went back we would maybe do something different. But that’s what happened. Absolutely there was no fight or altercation.”
On the balance of the European Championships: “To see young people growing and maybe getting to play for a place among the best in Europe is something that must please those who lead a federation. Of course a little bit I regret not being able to improve on the 12 medals of Split 1990. I had declared it and I am not backing down.”
