Borna Coric reveals the secret of his rebirth
“I think I learned it the hard way.”
He stunned the tennis world with a perfect week. Borna Coric, ranked number 152 before the start of the Western#38;Southern Open, triumphed in Ohio by making a resounding leap in the rankings. He is now number 29 in the world, a ranking he had already tasted in 2015, when he reached the number 33 position.
The Croatian’s talent has never been in question, but, complicit with a serious shoulder injury in 2021 and a long rehabilitation period, it seemed he could no longer explode with continuity within the circuit. The week in Cincinnati changed everything, and Coric himself analyzes the reasons why.
“I need to recover to stay fresh because this is the most important thing. And I think that’s what I did. But I think I learned it the hard way, because I used to make these mistakes when I was younger and beat good players-I just went into vacation mode,” he began, commenting on his victory in the final over Tsitsipas.
Ahead of the US Open, which begins on Monday, August 29, the Zagreb native presents himself with the credentials of a loose cannon: “US Open? Now I celebrate a little bit. No big deal, nothing special. Once again, it was very stressful for my body this week. I went into the tournament with a lot of training sessions, which I don’t usually do. So I already had moments of fatigue built up before the tournament. Then I played five matches in a row. So I need to rest for a couple of days. I need to recover and prepare well for the US Open,” he concluded.
