Wijnaldum drama, specialist is unbalanced on recovery time
Professor De Carli speaks
At least three months of stop for Georginio Wijnaldum, should Roma choose conservative therapy to treat his tibia injury. This is the verdict of Professor Angelo De Carli, orthopedist of the Italian National Under-21 team and specialist in Orthopedics, Traumatology and Sports Medicine, who commented with ‘Centro Suono Sport’, during the ‘Borderò’ broadcast, on the Dutch midfielder’s knockout.
“My information is more as a fan than as a fine connoisseur of the problem he has,” began Prof. De Carli. “There are considerations to be made, the tibia is an important bone that gives charge to the leg. What can create conflicting opinions is sports traumatology, where there are different treatments. I am convinced that if we are facing a compound fracture the best solution is conservative therapy, for a compound fracture, on the other hand, surgery.”
“The athlete is under inhuman pressure, but nature and biology have their own times,” he added. “You need three months to have a margin of safety and not have problems, there is nothing that can accelerate this type of fracture by much. The moment the player puts on a cast or brace that can allow loading, he after a while has no more pain but so he is subjected to stimuli that, if incorrect or excessive, can create recurrences or further fractures. Putting a nail or plate would fix the fracture and the player could train, the recovery time however is that.”
