Daniil Medvedev distances himself from Nick Kyrgios: “We are not friends”
On Sunday Daniil Medvedev will have to face Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 match at the US Open: “The match we played in Montreal was very indicative. We both know what to expect from each other. He was able to play the decisive points better in that match, and I will have to think about that. I will have to find a solution. I know what I have to do, and as far as I am concerned that is the most important thing at the present time. I hope to win, of course, I will do everything to keep going in the tournament.”
“I wouldn’t say we are friends, although there is no lack of respect. We’re on good terms, although I don’t think he’s my friend. I mean, I wouldn’t call us friends, then I don’t know what his thoughts are on that. When I say ‘friend’ I mean maybe we never went to the pub together, but there is a lot of respect between us in all aspects. On the field we have never had arguments and it is strange given our character. I also respect him for what he is capable of doing and how hard he works off the court with extra-tennis chores. Nick is a little different from everyone else, but I am no one to judge him and that is exactly why I respect him a lot.”
“I’m honestly surprised. We knew his talent, but we didn’t think he could even reach such milestones. I can only congratulate him because he seems to have finally made sense of his career,” Medvedev concluded.
