Benfica honors ‘Grande Torino’
Benfica pays tribute to ‘Grande Torino’
A delegation from Benfica, in town for tonight’s Champions League match, paid homage this morning at Superga to the plaque commemorating the Grande Torino and those lost in the May 4, 1949 tragedy. Leaders of the Lusitanian club laid flowers and gathered in prayer together with representatives of Torino. It should be remembered that the Lusitanian club had been the very last to face the phenomenal Granata, who a few hours later, would crash into the Superga basilica on their return flight from Portugal.
Benfica also wanted to post a tweet on its official account that read, “Eternal friendship,” underscoring the gratitude and twinning with the Turin club.
