Martina Navratilova in drama: “I have two forms of cancer.”
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova: “I will fight with all my might.”
Martina Navratilova revealed in an interview with The Times that she has been diagnosed with two forms of cancer, one in her throat and one in her breast. It is the return of a nightmare for the women’s tennis legend, who thirteen years ago already battled breast cancer, which resolved after a course of radiation therapy.
“It’s serious but still solvable,” said the naturalized U.S.-born Czech tennis player, winner of 59 Slam tournaments including singles, doubles and mixed doubles. “I hope for a favorable outcome. It will be unpleasant for a while, but I will fight with all my strength.”
This is the statement from her staff: “Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with stage one throat cancer. The prognosis is good and Martina will begin treatment this month. The type of cancer is HPV and this particular type responds very well to treatment. Martina noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck during the WTA finals in Fort Worth. When it did not go down, a biopsy was performed, the results came back as stage one throat cancer.”
“At the same time Martina was undergoing tests for her throat, she was found to have a suspicious form in her breast, later diagnosed as a tumor, completely unrelated to the throat cancer. Both of these tumors are in their early stages. Martina will not be covering the Australian Open for Tennis Channel from their studio, but hopes to participate from time to time through Zoom.”
