Martina Trevisan’s sensational feat: “I deserved it all.”
The Florentine beat Greek No. 1 Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-3 6-7(4) 7-5
It’s grand Italia on the Australian cement in Sydney, the scene of the United Cup 2023 confrontation between the Azzurra team, captained by Vincenzo Santopadre – former coach of Matteo Berrettini – and Greece. Martina Trevisan in fact accomplished the feat of this beginning of the new year by bending in the third set, at the end of an epic battle, the much better-ranked Maria Sakkari, world number 6 and the best Hellenic tennis player on the entire circuit.
Interviewed on court immediately after the end of the match, the Florentine athlete appeared overjoyed: “Having Matteo and Vincenzo with me was incredible, they gave me a lot of energy and allowed me to stay calm. Sometimes I feel I have to smile because it helps me relax. Life is so beautiful, having so many Italians cheering for me is priceless,” began the Azzurra, ranked number 24 before the match against Sakkari and now already number 22.
“During these ten days of United Cup I have grown so much. The first match was very difficult, but I grew day by day and started to feel better. I think I really deserve today’s win,” concluded a beaming Trevisan.
For the 29-year-old from Tuscany, it is the third career success against a Top 10 player, after those achieved at Roland Garros 2020 against Kiki Bertens (then number 8) and in Rabat 2021 against Garbine Muguruza (number 10), when she also won her first, and so far only, career WTA title.
