Matteo Berrettini knocked out
No feat for Italy.
The United States won 3-0 in the final of the “United Cup,” a new mixed-team event that kicked off the 2023 season. For the American team, third seed, clear path: it beat Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain in the group stage and, in the semifinals Poland (5-0 score).
On the Italian night Martina Trevisan succumbed in two sets to Pegula, while Musetti retired after losing the first set to Tiafoe.
Matteo Berrettini, No. 16 ATP, finally succumbed 7 6(4) 7 6(6), after a two-and-a-quarter hour battle, to Taylor Fritz, No. 9 in the rankings, losing his third match out of three against the Californian.
