Matteo Berrettini’s coach is confident: “He can win the Australian Open.”
Vincenzo Santopadre Speaks
Matteo Berrettini’s coach – Vincenzo Santopadre – gave an interview to ‘Il Messaggero’ in which he spoke about his pupil, ahead of his debut at the Australian Open, starting Monday, Jan. 16.
“He is growing in all aspects: he is more and more free, head and tennis, and he is getting better and better physically. That for us is the basis of everything,” stressed Matteo’s coach. “Today he is light, more and more able to handle game situations and pressures, and thus leave more room for instinct.
He then commented on Berrettini’s performance at the United Cup that saw Italy place second, defeated in the final by the United States: “Matteo is particularly good at always taking something away from matches anyway: this time he has gained the strength to be less hesitant. That comes from his newfound confidence. Against 4 of the strongest in the world he expressed a very high level of tennis, always coming out and serene from difficulties.”
Finally, Santopadre has no doubts about Berrettini’s chances at the Australian Open: “He likes Melbourne and is comfortable there, but you cannot judge a player by one tournament, even if it is a Slam, and then Matteo plays well a little bit everywhere. For sure, this lightness he is expressing is an extra weapon to aspire to win Melbourne: he has the potential.”
