Washington happy for Italian fencing aces
Three medals in one day
Three medals for Italy on the third day of the Paralympic World Cup trials in Washington. Italian double in men’s foil cat. A with Matteo Betti’s victory over Emanuele Lambertini. Silver medal for Rossana Pasquino in women’s epee cat. B. For the Italian delegation, the podiums won at the end of the individual events rise to 10.
After 11 years, Matteo Betti returns to success in a World Cup test. The Sienese athlete won Washington by beating Emanuele Lambertini 15-11 in the final. The Sienese, number 1 in the tournament, began his competition in the 16’s draw where he defeated France’s Charlot with a clear 15-2. In the 8’s draw defeated German Haupt 15-7. Still a transalpine on his way in the semifinals, Damien Tokatlian, beaten 15-6 before the all-Tricolor final.
Great performance also for Emanuele Lambertini. The Emilian defeated France’s Moez El Assine in the round of 16 with a peremptory 15-4 and secured the medal with a 15-11 success against England’s Lam Watson. He won without history in the semifinals where he beat, with a score of 15-1 the Polish Nalewajek before the final for 1st place against Matteo Betti.
Second star medal for Rossana Pasquino. Yet another second-place finish for the Campania native, who also made the podium in women’s epee cat. B. Number two in the rankings, Pasquino entered the competition in the round of 16 where she defeated Poland’s Strawinska 15-10. For Rossana victory in the quarterfinals against Dutch Tankink 15-8 clinching the security of the medal. In the semifinals she beat Japan’s Sakurai 15-12. In the final act, however, 15-7 defeat against Thailand’s Jana and second silver in three days. In the same competition 10th Alessia Biagini who had closed the round with four wins and one loss. In the round of 16 she was then defeated by Poland’s Pacek 15-10.
A single stroke separated Michele Massa from medaling in the U.S. capital. The Marche-based Academy of Fencing Fermo was defeated 15-14 in the quarterfinals by France’s Vadon. Massa’s competition began in the group round where he found four victories out of the four matches played. The first direct elimination match saw him defeat Argentina’s Alderete 15-10 in the round of 16 before an unfortunate defeat in the match valid for the certainty of a medal. Ninth-ranked Marco Cima. For the Vetralla athlete four wins and one loss in the group round. The Fiamme Oro foilist was then defeated in the round of 16 by Iraqi Ali 15-10.
Sofia Brunati finished 23rd in the women’s epee event cat. A. The Lombardy-born member of the Fiamme Oro competed in the group stage where she found one win and four losses, failing to qualify for the knockout round.
Italy thus closes the program of individual competitions at the Paralympic World Cup in Washington with 10 podiums: in the first two days, in fact, had come the success of Edoardo Giordan in saber A with Matteo Dei Rossi third; the second and third places – respectively – of Andreea Mogos and Loredana Trigilia in foil A; the second place of Rossana Pasquino in saber B; and the third places of Emanuele Lambertini and Matteo Dei Rossi in epee A.
In the Italian evening the closing of the star-studded event with the team trials in Men’s Foil, Women’s Epee and Open Sabre.
