Gareth Southgate issues challenge to Italian national team
On the eve of the challenge at the ‘Maradona’ in Naples that opens the path of Italy and England in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, England’s head coach Gareth Southgate spoke at a press conference launching his challenge to the Azzurri.
“Regardless of the goal, these are matches that have to be won,” Southgate said. We have won challenges of this caliber in the past, but we have to do it with continuity. And we haven’t won here since 1961, we want and need to make history. And then we mustn’t forget that Italy will be very motivated for not participating in the World Cup in Qatar.”
World Cup that England had played by stopping in the quarters against France, then finalist: “We don’t forget the disappointment but from that match we also drew positive considerations. We remain competitive at a very high level, we want to prove it in the first European Championship qualifying match.”
