F1, Mercedes dazed: “Red Bull ahead by a year”
F1, Toto Wolff resigned: “It will take 12 months to catch up”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to Crash.net did not mince words in explaining the German team’s current situation: “We have only put two races in this 2023 Formula One World Championship on the books, but it is unrealistic to think that we will be able to fight with the Red Bulls by looking at the current gaps. Our goal is to give everything we have on the track and then we will evaluate the path we are developing.”
According to Wolff, it will take at least a year to reach Red Bull’s performance levels: “A year ago we were able to make up a lot of ground with a car that was affected by porpoising. We also won a race in Brazil and came close, I think we can do the same on this occasion. But it will take six to 12 months, not less.”
