The words of Davide Cassani

Great achievement for Davide Cassani’s son, as told on Facebook by the very former coach of the national cycling team.

“Today I am telling you about Stefano. He is 33 years old and his dream, since he was a young boy, is to become a soccer coach. He played until he was 18 but his ball was not to get on the field but to stay on the sidelines, not to become a great soccer player but to sit on a bench and manage a team. He has always been an AC Milan superfan. In his twenties he started coaching, first at Cesena then Ravenna and two years ago at Fano. All youth teams, all teams of young hopefuls. Last year he accepted the proposal of the “Calcio Del Duca Grama” of Castiglione di Cervia and for the first time coached a team of “big boys” in Eccellenza. Despite being a very young team they managed to finish sixth bringing home salvation, the team’s goal. This year things went differently, Stefano changed the bench becoming the coach of Victor San Marino, also in Eccellenza. Today his team won the championship by winning promotion to Serie D.”

“Stefano is my son. As a father, I am the happiest person in this world because yesterday, at the stadium, I saw his eyes overflowing with happiness. Cycling? He never wanted a bicycle so I never bought it for him however he follows racing, that is, he knows a little about it. His passion is soccer, his dream is to coach. When I was 20 years old my mother did not want me to ride a bicycle. “Davide,” she told me, “cycling is not a job, you are an accountant, go work in a bank that is better. “Mom,” I replied, “I want to make a living from cycling, and I dream of making it my job, choosing my own way. I did, we did (his mother and I) the same thing with Stephen. Lots of advice, no orders. I never allowed myself to deny him anything because he, too, always knew what he had to do and wanted to do. He always made do and today he has realized his first, little big dream.

“I never talked about him because he always asked me to be discreet, because it always bothered him to hear ” that’s Cassani’s son.” I am a happy dad because yesterday I saw Stefano proud of what he has been able to accomplish. He always believed and wanted to be a coach, he always tried, with his own strength, to achieve a goal, to realize his dream. Dear Stephen, you know, the road you have taken is long and all uphill but the only way to reach the goal of your dreams is to believe blindly in what you do. Enjoy this promotion and remember, success fades the moment you get it. Keep this promotion in your memory drawer and in times of trouble stop and retrace the long road that led you and your team to victory. My father was proud of me. I am proud of you.”
