Cecchinato and Vavassori join Musetti and Sonego

Despite the forfeits (in order of announcement) of Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, and Fabio Fognini, the tricolor patrol at the start of the Madrid Masters 1000, at the main draw level, will still be large: Lorenzo Musetti, already in the second round, and Lorenzo Sonego, who will start instead from the first round, are joined by Marco Cecchinato, Matteo Arnaldi, and Andrea Vavassori, who passed their respective qualifying rounds on Tuesday.

Cecchinato defeated, in an all-Italian derby, Giulio Zeppieri: 7-6(5), 6-4 was the final score, with the Sicilian taking an hour and 43 minutes to overcome the resistance of his opponent, who was nonetheless in the match until the last games (Cecchinato’s break in the seventh game of the second set was decisive). Arnaldi, on the other hand, got the better of Frenchman Arthur Fils, despite a bad start: 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 was the score in favor of the current ranking number 105.

Finally, Vavassori overcame in two sets, the second of which was characterized by an interminable tie-break, Brazilian Felipe Melgeni Alves: first relatively simple fraction, closed 6-3, second lasting a good 79′ and ending 7-6 in favor of the Turin native, after a tie-break with a final score of 14-12.
