Aryna Sabalenka wins women’s tournament in Madrid

Aryna Sabalenka captured the Madrid WTA tournament by beating the circuit’s No. 1 ranked player, Iga Swiatek, in Saturday’s final. For the Belarusian athlete, who thanks to the 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 final won her second career WTA 1000 (the particular designation has existed since 2021), it was a rematch of the final played and lost to the Pole in the WTA 500 in Stuttgart.

The match lasted, in total, two hours and twenty-seven minutes: Sabalenka won the first set thanks mainly to the break she won in the eighth game, while in the second she immediately went down 3-0 and was unable to make up for Swiatek’s blows. The third set saw the Belarusian go up 3-0, get caught up to 3-3 but then regain control of the match, winning three consecutive games and raising her arms to the sky at the fourth match point.

Madrid once again brought good things to Sabalenka, who had already won on the same clay in 2021.
