Mexico, legendary goalkeeper Carbajal dead
Antonio Carbajal, Mexico’s legendary goalkeeper, died at the age of 93 at his home in Leon, where he had returned after a brief hospitalization.
Carbajal was the first player in soccer history to play in five World Cups and to take the field at least once in each of the editions he took part in (Brazil 1950, Switzerland 1954, Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and England 1966).
His record was later equaled by Germany’s Lothar Matthaeus, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon, multiple Ballon d’Or winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and three other Mexicans, former Verona man Rafa Marquez, current Salernitana goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, and Andres Guardado.
