Giro d’Italia 2023: Davide Bais wins at Campo Imperatore, big boys disappoint

Davide Bais won the seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023, the Capua-Gran Sasso d’Italia with the uphill finish at the 2130-meter altitude of Campo Imperatore.

The 25-year-old native of Rovereto, bearer of the Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team detached on the last ramps of the final climb the Czech Karel Vacek (Corratec Selle Italia), who placed second, and Simone Petilli (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), with whom he characterized this stage with a very long breakaway from the first kilometers. The trio’s lead reached as high as 12 minutes, and Petilli was the virtual pink jersey for a long time. All three had a chance to seize their first professional victory; Bais succeeded.

Very disappointing behavior by the GC men, who arrived 3’10” behind: with a stage that also featured the climbs of Roccaraso and Calascio Remco Evenepoel merely sprinted to take fourth place in the stage ahead of his main rival Primoz Roglice Thibaut Pinot. Norwegian Andreas Leknessund comfortably retained the pink jersey. Tomorrow’s eighth stage, the 207-kilometer Terni-Fossombrone with Monte delle Cesane 36.4 kilometers from the finish.
