Official: Marcelo Bielsa is the new Uruguay coach

After adventures with Argentina and Chile, Marcelo Bielsa has decided to return to South America by accepting the Uruguay bench. After a successful spell at Leeds, “El Loco” is ready to pick up the heavy legacy left by Óscar Tabárez.

“The Uruguayan Football Federation has announced the hiring of Marcelo Bielsa as the new coach of the Uruguayan national team for the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The Rosario man will take the reins of a team after his tenure at Leeds, a club where he coached between June 2018 and February 2022. During this time, highlights include promotion to the Premier League for the 2020-2021 season by winning the English Football League Championship (second division) title.

At the national team level, Uruguay will be his third experience since from 1998 to 2004 he focused on his national team, with which he participated in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea-Japan, and between 2007 and 2011 he was coach of Chile, one of the five CONMEBOL representatives in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Welcome Marcelo!” this was the note issued by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol
