Alessandro Covi is knocked out, the Giro loses another piece
Giro d’Italia, another retreat
There is no peace for the Giro d’Italia 2023.
After 36 withdrawals due in part to Covid-19 cases, raising the white flag today was Alessandro Covi. The UAE Team Emirates rider will not be at the start of stage 12 due to yesterday’s nasty crash, the same one that cost Tao Geoghegan Hart a fractured femur.
“Covi suffered a possible fracture of the sacrum and will not be able to continue in this Giro,” explained Dr. Jason Suter. “He will return home immediately to get the full diagnosis.
Thus 139 riders remain in the saddle at the Giro d’Italia for now. Among those who have retired many famous names, such as Filippo Ganna and Remco Evenepoel.
