Daniil Medvedev, first time in Rome: his at the Internazionali d’Italia
An absolute first at the Foro Italico.
Daniil Medvedev won the Internazionali d’Italia for the first time in his career, beating Holger Rune in just two sets in the final in Rome. The final score was 7-5, 7-5, coming in just one hour and 43 minutes of play. For the Russian, who from Monday will again be No. 2 in the ATP world rankings, it is the 20th career trophy but the first time in the one in the capital.
The match already starts at a good pace and there are no jolts for the first four games, in the fifth however Rune gets two break points that he fails to exploit. Medvedev holds out and the contest remains even until 6-5, when it is the Muscovite himself who takes advantage of the first break of his match taking the set as well.
The next set was more tightly contested, opening with Rune immediately breaking serve from his rival. Medevedev, however, still managed to fight back and evened the score with the 2-2 break. Then in the seventh game the young Dane finds the overtaking break again, holding his rival even to 0 points. Medvedev, however, does not let it get him down and reverses the fortunes of the match with two new breaks, making it 5-5 and then the 7-5 final.
