Lautaro Martinez brings Fiorentina to its knees: Coppa Italia to Inter Milan
The Coppa Italia goes to Inter, thanks to a pulled Lautaro Martinez.
Inter won the Coppa Italia, the ninth in its history and the second in a row. The final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome ended 2-1 for the Nerazzurri, who were able to hold off a Fiorentina side that was generous in the second half but unable to respond to Lautaro Martinez’s brace after taking the lead through Nico Gonzalez. For the Viola, the last success in the competition remains that achieved in 2001.
The match started in the best of ways for the violets, who took the lead at the first opportunity. Already in the 3rd minute, in fact, Ikoné’s initiative on the left and his cross cutting across the entire area surprised Inter, while on the opposite side it was Gonzalez who beat Handanovic. Inter tried to react with Dzeko, but also risked on shots from the distance by Amrabat and underhand by Gonzalez himself.
However, Inter needed only a few minutes to turn their fortunes around: after an untapped counterattack by Dzeko, in the 28th minute Lautaro Martinez equalized on Calhanoglu’s kissing assist and in the 37th minute he signed the winning goal with a spectacular right-footed turn on Barella’s cross from the wing. The second half opened with out-of-bounds attempts by Castrovilli on one side and Dimarco on the other. For the Nerazzurri then only Lukaku was seen, while the Viola came close to equalizing with Cabral, Gonzalez, Biraghi and at least three times Jovic. However, the result did not change anymore and Simone Inzaghi lifted his third Coppa Italia as coach (and sixth overall).
