Davis Cup, Matteo Arnaldi takes Italy to Malaga
Matteo Arnaldi beats Leo Borg: Italy advances to the knockout stage
After seeing ghosts in the first day against Canada and having risked not a little against Chile, Italy can celebrate the access to the knockout phase of the Davis Cup thanks to the point obtained after the first match against Sweden, won by Matteo Arnaldi over Leo Borg, sufficient for the passage of the round.
The 2001 class, number 47 in the ATP rankings, got the better of the two-year-younger son of art, who currently holds position number 334 in the world rankings, rather nimbly: at the Unipol Arena in Bologna it ended 6-4, 6-3, after an hour and twenty-two minutes of play.
The math rewards Italy thanks to the four matches won out of the seven played so far: even if Sweden were to win the second singles and doubles, bringing them to a tie with the Azzurri, they would not reach the latter on the level of individual matches won, being currently at zero won and seven lost.
Sigh of relief then for Italy, which after the controversy that preceded the week dedicated to the group stage of the Finals 2023 è still managed to obtain the minimum goal, that of qualification. The knockout phase (quarters, semifinals and final) will be held at the Palacio de Deportes José Maria Martin Carpena in Malaga, from Nov. 21 to 26.
