At Giro dell'Emilia Primoz Roglic wins Slovenian derby with Tadej Pogacar

Him again, Primoz Roglic: after his successes in 2019 and 2021, the Slovenian of Jumbo-Visma won today for the third time the Giro dell’Emilia-Granarolo, the race organized by patron Adriano Amici’s Gruppo Sportivo Emilia, now in its 106th edition. It was a beautiful race that was è decided in the final, at the end of the fifth ascent to the iconic climb of “San Luca”, which dominates Bologna from’above. Roglic edged out compatriot Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) by a few meters, while rounding out the podium è was Britain’s Simon Yates (Jayco Alula), for a great podium finish. Fourth place for Spaniard Enric Mas (Movistar Team), winner a year ago.
With three successes on the’roll of honor, Roglic equals Fausto Coppi and Gianni Motta. Better did only Costante Girardengo, with five victories in the Giro dell’Emilia.

A day in which the Giro dell’Emilia BPER Banca Internazionale Donne Elite was also run, which went to the Danish Cecilie Uttrop Ludwig of Fds-Suez, who preceded teammate Marta Cavalli.

The CRONACY
After the start, in the picturesque setting of Piazza Martiri in Carpi, a small group of eight riders formed in the lead: Alex Bogna (Alpecin Deceuninck), Christian Scaroni (Astana), Jacopo Mosca (Lidl Trek), Marcel Camprubi (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Floris De Tier (Bingoal WB), Mattia Bais (Eolo Kometa), Emanuele Ansaloni and Matteo Montefiori (Team Technipes). Gradually the small group, after touching a maximum lead of two and a half minutes, thins out, until only Bais and Scaroni remain in front. The group gets back together at km 162, when the first of five climbs to the Colle della Madonna di San Luca begins. The first sprint è that of Quentin Pacher (Groupama Fdj) and Chris Harper (Jayco Alula), who gain about thirty seconds on the group of favorites. Harper then remains alone in the lead and alone tackles the third climb, while on the fourth he is caught by the top group, consisting of Mas, Vlasov, Carapaz, Roglic, Ciccone, Simon and Adam Yates, Pogacar and Woods. On the’last lap attacks and counter-attacks, by Vlasov, Woods and then Pogacar, but no one manages to make the gap, until’Roglic places the decisive sprint with three hundred meters to go.

Great spectacle also for the Giro dell’Emilia BPER Banca Internazionale Donne Elite, which for the first time included the double climb to San Luca. The race thus became even more selective than in past editions: Cecilie Uttrop Ludwig pulled away from everyone in the final ascent, after a small group of a dozen athletes had been selected in front along the first climb to San Luca. The Dane from Fdj Suez had already set herself on this finish line in 2020. Second place for her teammate Marta Cavalli, third was French Juliette Labous (Team Dsm – Firmenich). Fourth position for Gaia Realini (Lidl Trek).
