Gianmarco Tamberi: "Being flag bearer in Paris would be an immense honor"

"2023 è was a fantastic year, I managed to realize my dream and now I am looking forward to the most important year of my career after Tokyo, to try to confirm the victory in the high jump never succeeded to anyone".

This was said by Olympian Gianmarco Tamberi, this year’s world champion in Budapest, after receiving the Athlete of the Year award from Gazzetta dello Sport aboard an Msc cruise ship in Naples.

The champion also talks about the possibility of him being the flag-bearer at the inaugural ceremony in Paris 2024: "That would be crazy,” he said, “and I have chills at the idea, I have always dreamed of being the flag-bearer, it would be an immense honor, these are moments that reward people like us in athletics, even compared to soccer players who earn more, but who però maybe envy us moments like carrying the flag. Hopefully it will happen, I am not the one to decide, Malagò and his team will make the right decision".

Tamberi also talks about the European Championships that will take place in Rome from June 7 to 12, before the Olympics that start in Paris on July 26: "Between different scenarios the decision è always complicated to make, every athlete lives his life. My goal è the Olympics: in Rome I want to be in shape, of course, but the priority è è is where I represent Italy, the Olympics, and if need be I am ready to put aside the selfish desire to be a protagonist in Rome. My concentration è 100% on Paris, for us in athletics the goal è to have Olympic goals and after 5 medals in Tokyo we are in the spotlight and we do not want to disappoint anyone".
