The words of Maurizio Sarri ahead of Atletico Madrid-Lazio

Atletico Madrid and Lazio will face each other on the last and decisive day of the Champions League group stage to determine who will finish first and who will finish second in Group E. On the eve of the match, Capitolini coach Maurizio Sarri wanted to send a clear message to his boys.

“I am of the opinion that matches should be attacked. The boys in training seemed to me to be stimulated, and then there is this stadium, where Atletico has not lost for 19 games. First place matters a lot and I hope the boys only have their heads on this match and take the field with the desire to win the round and redeem the last performance,” the Biancocelesti coach began.

“On Saturday in Verona we did well. We did a better performance than many matches we won. We missed 30 seconds. I expect improvement from the team. We managed to regain a minimum of solidity that was lacking in the initial part and this helped us in the last few outings. Offensively, on the other hand, we are still missing something,” continued the Capitoline coach.

“I haven’t decided the lineup yet. The only sure one is Gila. I will make my evaluations without thinking about the next league match with Inter. We have to be focused only on tomorrow’s match and on taking the field with the right attitude. We made a miracle to get to the round of 16 and Atletico is in another category. It’s not natural for us to do these results in Europe, but if we got this far it means we did a great job,” added the former Chelsea and Juventus coach.

“The Lazio environment is devastating, not the club, but everything around it. Unattainable expectations are created that also create frustration. I am not affected by this, however, the 20-25 year olds are. There is a perpetual sense of dissatisfaction. We come from three wins and a draw and it feels like we are at a funeral, whereas if on the opposite side, with these results, they would have fireworks in the square. This environment needs to calm down, become more logical and more optimistic,” Maurizio Sarri concluded.
