Eric Montross è died, he was only 52 years old
The basketball world, particularly the NCAA and NBA, mourned the passing of Eric Montross, who died in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at just 52 years old after battling in his final year with cancer. Breaking the news first è was the Associated Press. Montross, a star in his college days right with the University of North Carolina in the early '90s, also played eight seasons in the NBA.
"Eric's family è grateful for the enormous support and truly overwhelming love expressed by so many people as he fought with determination" these were the words circulated on Monday by the University of North Carolina through a note that confirmed the dramatic news of the passing of the former basketball player, who after the end of his career had started working as a commentator just for his Alma mater.
"To know Eric was to be his friend,” the note continued, “the family è convinced that the generous and caring ways that marked his life will continue through the equally generous and caring behaviors of the many people with whom he was able to demonstrate his deep and sincere kindness".
Montross, after his four years in college (the same one in which Michael Jordan had played in the first half of the '80s), was chosen with the ninth call in the 1994 Draft, by the Boston Celtics. In the Massachusetts franchise he played for two seasons, before donning the jackets of the Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors. He retired from competitive play in 2002.
