Superleague ruling: the La Liga and its president won’t stand for it
The response of La Liga and its president, Javier Tebas, to the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union, which ruled in favor of the Superleague, having sanctioned the abuse of a dominant position by Uefa and FIFA regarding the organization of soccer competitions in Europe, was not long in coming.
"La Liga stresses that the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) does not endorse the European Super League and that UEFA has already included in 2022 an amendment to its regulations for the authorization of new competitions, which is in line with what the CJEU has now established" reads the Spanish league’s statement.
"Although the promoters of the Super League claim that this ruling is in their favor, the reality is that the CJEU è has been clear in stating that "a competition such as the Super League project need not be authorized". After asking general questions about FIFA and UEFA rules, the CJEU does not rule on this specific project in its ruling".
"They are already starting to intoxicate, as I had warned, they have always been able to organize competitions outside of the environment of UEFA and FIFA, and this cannot be banned, the problem is their conditions for being under the organization of UEFA and FIFA" wrote the La Liga president on his official 'X' profile.
"We need transparent, clear, objective rules for the approval of tournaments, which do not apply with mere disapproval, and there must be an objective regulatory framework that requires conditions comparable to the entire sector, but which is not left to the free discretion of the specific leaders of FIFA and UEFA, because we would be in a situation of abuse of dominant power,” Tebas added. Already in 2022, UEFA established a procedure to authorize new competitions that the Superleague can access".
