Paola Egonu, half a top scorer title
The Numbers of Paola Egonu
Paola Egonu dominates the scorers’ ranking at the end of the first round of the A1 Women’s Volleyball Series. After thirteen matches played, the talented opposite from Milan is at the top of the ranking with 272 points. This is an outstanding result for the 25-year-old young athlete, the undisputed leader of the Milan team, which ranks second in the standings, behind the unbeatable Italian champions Conegliano by only four points.
Despite her commanding position, Russian Vita Akimova è a real threat to Egonu. The 21-year-old from Novara proves to be a formidable prospect, having scored 266 points, only six less than her opponent. It promises, therefore, to be a close duel that will hold court throughout the round of return for the palm of the tournament’s best scorer.
The league’s two other top bombers, Sweden’s Isabelle Haak and Italy’s Ekaterina Antropova, are further behind the leading scorer. Haak scored 244 points for her team Conegliano, while Antropova, who had to serve some early-season injuries, è stopped at 231 points with Scandicci. Malwina Smarzek, of Casalmaggiore, è even further back with 208 points, while Camilla Mingardi, in Vallefoglia colors, è sixth with 199 points scored.
