Genoa's positive streak stops at eight consecutive games as it suffers its first defeat of 2024 at the hands of Atalanta. Heavy result for the final 4-1, but deceiving given the two goals conceded in full recovery.
“È difficult to talk about,” Gilardino explained, “but only because of the final result. Becauseé the attitude, strength and interpretation that the boys put on the field against a great team show the maturity achieved. The performance there'è was and I am only sorry for the result so wide becauseé we would not have deserved it".
A Genoa that remounted a first time with Malinoskyi and came close to a second equalizer with Gudmundsson with a formation in the final very offensive. A risk that did not pay off: “As far as I am concerned I wanted to force the match – said Gilardino explaining in particular the choice of inserting Ekuban, Vitinha and Messias -. I wanted to take it back and we had also budgeted for situations that were then seen. Moreover, even avoidable ones since they were a consequence of some of our indecisions and I am talking about the 3-1 and 4-1 goals. I repeat I am only sorry for the result soì wide becauseé we would not have deserved it".
"The first 20' of the second half were incredible – Gilardino continued – also becauseé we were facing a tough team. There’è regret for not concretizing in the second half the amount of play we made and how much we created but I can’;t blame the boys for anything. Però defeats teach me so much and the team must be taught that we must never lose balance. Forò I honestly prefer to have a team that has this spirit, this courage, adrenaline and desire to go and take back a game. Of course without taking four goals”.
