It started on the right foot, but not without suffering, the final of the Rotterdam ATP for Jannik Sinner: the South Tyrolean, in fact, overcame in the first set the Australian Alex De Minaur, number 11 in the world rankings, closing the fraction on 7-5. As many as 64 minutes of play on the concrete of the Dutch city, home of a tournament that has been part of the ATP 500 group since 2009.
After an early study phase, which saw the two contenders win the first games on their own serve until 2-2, Sinner shifted gears in the fifth game, snatching the first break of the match. After getting to 5-4, però the South Tyrolean wasted no less than four set points, allowing De Minaur to get back on 5-all. The last two games were però perfect for Sinner, who overcame the moment of difficulty and went on to win the set.
Jannik Sinner’s path to the final of the Rotterdam ATP tournament saw him prevail in the first round against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (world number 66) 6-3, 6-3 and in the second round against French veteran Gael Monfils (currently 70th in the world rankings) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In the quarters, the South Tyrolean overcame Canada's Milos Raonic after the latter retired 7-6(4), 1-1, while in the semifinals the next ATP No. 3 got the better of another athlete from the Netherlands, Tallon Griekspoor, in two sets: 6-2, 6-4 the partials of a match closed by Sinner in one hour and 19 minutes.
