In Indian Wells overtaking operation for Sinner over Alcaraz
The gap between Carlos Alcaraz, number 2 in the world, and Jannik Sinner, number 3, has è narrowed to 535 points. Not only that: the 20-year-old Murcian, now 1050 points away from the throne still firmly in the hands of Novak Djokovic, had to withdraw due to injury from the Rio de Janeiro tournament.
While we wait to understand the real entityà of this injury, here are opening up for Sinner the possibility of overtaking the Spaniard in the Masters 1000 on the California cement of Indian Wells, which begins next week and of which Alcaraz è defending champion.
A year ago Carlos beaté Jannik himself in the semifinals 7-6 6-3 and then in the final dominated; Danil Medvedev 6-3 6-2. So there are plenty of points that Alcaraz will have to defend and the only way to stay ahead of Sinner would be to win the tournament again.
Here are the chances of overtaking Sinner: any result if Alcaraz before the quarterfinals; if he gets at least into the round of 16 and Alcaraz loses in the quarters; if he gets at least into the semifinals and Alcaraz loses in the semifinals. Finally, if he wins the tournament Janni would still overtake Carlos even if he meets him in the final.
