Italian water polo team in mourning for legendary Giuseppe D’Altrui

Italian water polo in mourning: Giuseppe "Geppino" D'Altrui, gold medalist with the Settebello in Rome 1960, passed away in Pescara. Of that magical team he was the captain and at the Olympic Games, at the Swimming Stadium, he won the gold medal ahead of the Soviet Union, Hungary and Yugoslavia who dominated the scene.

Born in Naples on April 7, 1934, and a player for Rari Nantes Napoli and Fiamme Oro, he made 75 appearances with the national team’s cap and also won a bronze medal at the 1954 European Championships in Turin, Italy, two gold medals at the Mediterranean Games in Barcelona 1955 and Naples 1963 and a silver medal at the 1959 Mediterranean Games in Beirut.

With D’Altrui made up Rome’s historic lineup Dante Rossi (Sportiva Nervi), Brunello Spinelli (Fiamme Oro), Eraldo Pizzo (Pro Recco), Gianni Lonzi (RN Florentia), Franco Lavoratori (Pro Recco), Danio Bardi (Fiamme Oro), Rosario Parmegiani (RN Pegli), Luigi Marinelli (Canottieri Napoli), Salvatore Gionta (SS Lazio Nuoto), Giancarlo Guerrini (SS Lazio Nuoto) and Amedeo Ambron (Fiamme Oro).
