Luciano Darderi’s great moment continues: the 22-year-old Italo-Argentine, who has risen to world number 80, made it through the first round of the ATP 250 on the red clay of Santiago, Chile, beating in three sets that ended in a tie-break, 7-6 6-7 7-6, Argentine Federico Bagnis, number 148.
No break in the first set in which the’only one to save break points è Bagnis, one in the seventh game and three in the’eleventh, also the tie-break è balanced until 4-4, when Darderi operates the’decisive stretch winning it 7-4.
The’Italo-Argentine loses his serve in the first game of the second set, recovers it in the’eighth, then in the tie-break he flies to 5-2 and then to 6-4, having then two match points at his disposal, but he does not take advantage of them, rather, he loses four consecutive points and the tie-break for 8-6.
We then go to the deciding set, in which the only break points, two, are saved by Darderi in the second game. Yet another tie-break, Luciano still goes up 5-2, gets a comeback at 5-5 but then the next two points are his and the match closes after more than 3.20 hours of battle.
In the second round, Darderià will face another Argentine, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, number 161 in the ATP ranking.
