The Roman tennis player overcame his compatriot in two sets (6-3 7-6) after an hour and forty minutes of play, thus reaching the semifinals of the Moroccan tournament.
Berrettini got off to a strong start immediately, taking Sonego off serve in the second game at the first useful opportunity. The Roman, who leaves crumbs to his opponent on serve, retains the break lead until the final 6-3. In the second set, the Piedmontese player put up more resistance and dragged Berrettini all the way to the tie-break, not before Matteo cancelled a set point for Lorenzo. In the decisive game forò Sonego delivers with a double fault, which gives the victory to Berrettini.
Berrettini thus returns to the semifinals of an ATP tournament after 531 days. Here he will face the winner of the match between Argentine Mariano Navone, world number 60 and seventh seed, and Australian Aleksandar Vukic, number 67 in the ATP rankings.
