Monte-Carlo qualifiers: Lorenzo Sonego and Luca Nardi to the decisive round
Luca Nardi and Lorenzo Sonego have reached the decisive qualifying round at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, the first clay-court event 1000 of the season, which kicks off on Sunday, April 7. It was a race against time for the Piedmontese tennis player, who, after being defeated by Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 in Marrakech, immediately traveled to the Principality to play the qualifiers.
Instead of facing Fabio Fognini, who was forced to forfeit shortly before the start of the match, Sonego met Belgian David Goffin, world number 102, beating him in a comeback in three sets (4-6 6-4 6-4) after two hours and 35 minutes of play. Lorenzo will now face Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, number 93 in the ATP rankings, for a place in the main draw.
Luca Nardi, fresh winner at the Naples challenger, overcame Frenchman Lucas Pouille in two sets (6-4 6-3) after an hour and 31 minutes of play. In the decisive round, the Marche player will face another Frenchman: Alexandre Muller, No. 86 in the world rankings.
Nothing to do instead for Flavio Cobolli, defeated by India's Sumit Nagal, world number 95, in two sets (2-6 3-6).
