Apotheosis Atalanta at Anfield: 0-3 over Liverpool
A match destined to go down in the history of the club, and not only.
Atalanta dream at Anfield. Gian Piero Gasperini’s Nerazzurri achieved the feat of beating Liverpool in the Europa League, and they did it with a 3-0 win that was as rounded and unexpected as it was richly deserved. After a first half with some risks, but also several chances to their credit, Dea went ahead. In the second half then strolls over the dreaded Reds, at their first home defeat after 33 matches: 28 wins and 5 draws for the hosts, moreover equaling their worst home defeat in Europe. It was another 0-3 and a 2-5, both coming against Real Madrid.
That it could be a magical night for Atalanta can be sensed as early as 3', when Pasalic arrives alone in front of the goalkeeper but sensationally hits him in the face. Liverpool then poured forward, but Gasperini’s defense held. At the other end De Ketelaere tries but fails to find Koopmeiners backheel in the middle of the area. Nunez wastes the incredible, Elliott with a shot from the distance hits first the crossbar and then the post. Even the luck therefore helps the Dea, in the lead at 38' thanks to the counterattack finalized by Scamacca on an assist from Zappacosta.
One would expect a resumption in the trenches, but è so è only partially. Liverpool attacks, but Atalanta plays it even. So è Salah’s attempts and Van Dijk’s insertions on corners are answered by Koopmeiners. È forò the great night of Scamacca, who in 60'again on a counterattack silences Anfield on De Ketelaere’s service. Koopmeiners and the same Scamacca fail to score the third, Salah finds a goal cancelled out for offside, then at 83'83' comes the apotheosis: Scamacca rewards Ederson's insertion, shot rejected and Pasalic in tap-in completes the party.
