Jannik Sinner vs. Lorenzo Sonego, four previous
In Madrid, the Italian derby between Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego
On Saturday, April 27, Italian tennis will experience another important day: in the second round of the Madrid Masters 1000, in fact, Jannik Sinner will challenge Lorenzo Sonego in an Italian derby that pits the No. 1 seed in the Spanish capital’s tournament (already in the second round thanks to the bye guaranteed by the organization to the 32 seeded players) against the Piedmontese tennis player, who in the first round got rid of Richard Gasquet in two sets.
At the ATP Tour level, Sinner and Sonego (who have been doubles partners on several occasions) have played each other four times, always in 2023, with the balance clearly in favor of the South Tyrolean who has not only won all the previous matches, but has done so by dropping just one set to his compatriot. The first precedent, in chronological order, è that of Montpellier: Sinner’s 6-4, 6-2 victory in the quarters, with the South Tyrolean heading into the French ATP 250.
The next match between the two was staged instead in Halle, son Sinner winning in a comeback 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4, while at the U.S. Open, in the second round, there were always three sets but all of them were the prerogative of the South Tyrolean, who won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The last previous è finally that of Vienna, another tournament won by the San Candido native: Sonego meets him in the round of 16, the final score è 6-2, 6-4.
For Sinner it is not è the first derby of this 2024: in another second round of a Masters 1000, that of Miami, the future winner of the tournament in fact faced and defeated Andrea Vavassori, closing 6-3, 6-4 a match that lasted one hour and seventeen minutes. Sinner would go on to win the tournament, beating Griekspoor, O'Connell, Machac, Medvedev and Dimitrov in a row.
