Paris 2024, Filippo Volandri takes stock of the situation after Jannik Sinner’s forfeit
In the aftermath of Jannik Sinner’s forfeit from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to tonsillitis, Filippo Volandri, the Davis captain and Italian coach, spoke at a press conference about the chances of Italian tennis in the Olympic tennis competitions to be played on the clay at Roland Garros. Here are his words reported by the’Ansa.
"The goal remains to bring a medal back to Italy. The scheduling of the Olympic appointment had been decided in the most correct way. After a week of training on land, Jannik would join us here on Tuesday and train for three days with important players on the most prestigious courts. I have not spoken to Jannik. I feel sorry first of all for him, who è an example of professionalism ".
“È obvious that the absence of the world number 1 changes the balance. However, the experience of these years has taught us that we should never think about what could have been. And we were good at being ready: we had studied the rules and made the decisions resulting from Jannik’s waiver in a matter of seconds”.
