Italy's artistic gymnastics è made history: the Fairies won an incredible silver medal and finished behind only Simone Biles's United States in the women's team gymnastics final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Angela Andreoli, Alice D'Amato, Manila Esposito, Elisa Iorio and Giorgia Villa: these are the names of the girls who made Italian gymnastics history. Italy finished with a score of 165,494, putting behind Brazil, bronze medalist with 164,497, and Great Britain, fourth with 164,263.
It's Italy's ninth medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze. The Azzurre after the victory cried with joy for an incredible result: we haven't had a medal in the team competition for 96 years.
On social media Vanessa Ferrari cheered happily for her teammates: "It's history", wrote on Instagram the individual silver medal gymnast in Tokyo.
Italy has won a total of 40 medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting a new record for the number of metals placed around its neck in a single edition of the Olympic Games. Taking the highest step; top step of the podium in Japan were Marcell Jacobs – Men’s 100 meters, Gianmarco Tamberi – Men’s high jump, Massimo Stano – Men’s 20 km march, Antonella Palmisano – Women’s 20 km march, Men’s 4×100 relay – Lorenzo Patta, Marcell Jacobs, Eseosa Desalu, Filippo Tortu, Federica Cesarini and Valentina Rodini – Rowing, women’s lightweight doubles, Francesco Lamon, Simone Consonni, Jonathan Milan and Filippo Ganna – Cycling, men’s team pursuit, Luigi Busà – Karate, kumite -75kg and Vito Dell’Aquila – Taekwondo, -58kg.
