Italy beat Greece 12-8 to win its first victory in the Olympic tournament. It needed to defeat the Hellenic women to carve out hope of continuing on the Olympic path, to get back on track in the quarterfinal qualification talk. And so itì è was. The shout at the end of the national anthem had already manifested all the sporting ardor, charge and grit of the Azzurri. Absolute dragger è captain Valeria Palmieri, author of four goals. Italy thus breaks the Greek tab: between continental and world championships, the Hellenic women had beaten the Azzurri (12-9) in the semifinals of the European Championships in Split 2022, in the group stage at the World Championships in Fukuoka 2023 (16-12) and this year in the final for third place (7-6) at the European Championships in Eindhoven and in the quarterfinals (14-12) at the World Championships in Doha.
However, during pre-Olympic preparation, Italy had already won, 11-5, over Greece on the third day of the Rotterdam Trophy last July 11. The Setterosa è awaited by Spain, reigning Olympic silver medalists, on Sunday, Aug. 4 at 3:35 p.m.
The group stages will be played at the Aquatics Centre. From the quarterfinals, accessed by the top four teams from the two groups, play at La Défense Arena: finals on Saturday, Aug. 10.
