Mission accomplished for the two Italian women in the pole vault at the Paris Olympics. They qualified for the finals Roberta Bruni and Elisa Molinarolo, both with 4.55 in the first round and with a clear path to the previous measures of 4.20 and 4.40 as well. No Italian had ever made it past the preliminary round at the Olympics in this specialty introduced in 2000 for women. It will beà a very crowded final with twenty athletes on Wednesday evening becauseé eleven female sprinters will jump 4.55 and nine others will finish tied with 4.40.

Promoted to the semifinals in the 400 hurdles Alessandro Sibilio, fourth in the battery with 48.43. Among women Ayomide Folorunso won in 55.07 in the repechage round and earned a ticket to the semifinals, out went Rebecca Sartori (55.44) and Alice Muraro (55.48). In the 400 meters, Alice Mangione placed fifth with 51.60 in her battery, without getting into the first three to pass directly, but she will be able to return to the track tomorrow morning in the recovery round. Anna Bongiorni (also back from some physical problems) and Dalia Kaddari forgo the repechage round of the 200 to focus on the 4×100-meter relay event.

Same choice for Davide Re, who will not start in the extra round of the 400 awaiting a medical health evaluation. Seven more Azzurri are competing tonight with the finals of European champion Nadia Battocletti in the 5000 (9:15 p.m.) and Daisy Osakue in the discus (8:30 p.m.). Debuting in the first round of the 200 meters are Olympic relay gold medalists Filippo Tortu and Fausto Desalu, from 7:55 p.m. with Diego Pettorossi, while at 7:04 p.m. the 3000 steeplechase heats with Yassin Bouih and Osama Zoghlami kick off.
