Gianmarco Tamberi, end of dream and bitter tears: watch video
Gianmarco Tamberi surrenders Olympic scepter to Hamish Kerr
The images of the high jump final have now gone around the world, with Gianmarco Tamberi who despite the health problems that have gripped him in recent days and, even more so, in the hours leading up to the decisive competition, tried until the last to defend in Paris 2024 the Olympic title he won in Tokyo 2020.
Gimbo eventually failed to clear 2.22, failing three attempts at 2.27 following which he è burst into tears. Succeeding him on the roll of honor was New Zealander Hamish Kerr, who defeated American Shelby McEwen in a tiebreaker after both failed to go beyond the 2.36 mark. Third place went to Qatari Mutaz Barshim, a brotherly friend of Tamberi with whom he shared Five Circles gold three years ago, without going through the tiebreaker. At the foot of the podium was the other Italian competing, Stefano Sottile, who stopped like Barshim at 2.34 but with an extra error at 2.31.
