ATP Montreal, Rublev stops at the best of times: Popyrin wins
Rublev had eliminated Sinner and Arnaldi
After eliminating Sinner in the quarterfinals and Arnaldi in the semifinals, Rublev lost the final of the Montreal ATP tournament. The victory è went to Popyrin, who did well to impose himself in two sets (6-2, 6-4 the partials) in a final in which the Russian did not è manage to play his best tennis, unlike the Australian who è was almost perfect.
For Popyrin this is the first Masters 1000 of his career. An outstanding achievement. He becomes, in fact, the first Australian to win a Masters 1000 after a full 21 years. A historic feat that will also allow him to enter the Top 30 and, therefore, to be seeded at the next US Open.
It was a perfect week for Popyrin who, at age 25, is discovering himself as a player of the highest level, able to play on equal terms with the best players on the circuit. He won the tournament as No. 62 in the ATP rankings, becoming the second lowest ranked winner of the Montreal ATP (Pernfors won, as No. 95, in 1993).
È it was a very positive week for me. This is a big step forward, I am very proud for being able to stay very focused throughout the tournament", the words of the winner Popyrin at the end of the final won against Rublev.
