Paris 2024 Paralympics, first golds for Italy swimming
Italy's first gold medals at the Paralympic Games in Paris. Carlotta Gilli and Francesco Bocciardo won them. In the final of the women’s 100 butterfly S13 Gilli, already the champion in Tokyo, beat the U.S. Grace Nuhfer and Uzbek Muslima Odilova.
Bocciardo a few minutes after the one won by Carlotta Gilli set a new Paralympic record by finishing first in the men's 200 freestyle S5 race, besting Kyril Pulver and Ukraine's Oleksandr Kolarov.
Simone Barlaam won silver in the 400 freestyle S9maschili won by France's Ugo Didier, who overtook Barlaam in the last pool, while bronze è went to Australia's Brenden Hall.
Shortly thereafter, on the podium of the same women’s event è climbed Vittoria Bianco, who took bronze. The race è was won by Hungary's Zsofia Konkoly, while silver è went to Australia's Lakeisha Patterson.
Francesco Bettella won bronze in the men’s 100 backstroke S1 event. Bettella, in his fifth Olympic medal, è was preceded by Spain’s Miguel Navarro Riofrio, gold, and Greece’s Dimitrios Karypidis.
Angela Procida took bronze in the women’s 100 backstroke S2 event. The Italian woman è secured third place behind Singaporean athlete Pin Xiu Pin and silver to Mexico's Haidee Viviana Aceves Perez.
Efrem Morelli è silver in the men’s 50 breaststroke SB3. The blue è was beaten only by Japan's Takayuki Suzuki, gold. Bronze to Spaniard Miguel Luque.
Finally, Monica Boggioni then nabbed bronze in the women’s 200 freestyle S5. That makes eight medals brought home by Italian swimmers on the first day of competition in Paris. The Italian fought for the podium, surpassed only by Britain's Tully Kearney and Ukraine's Iryna Poida.
